Who can take part

  • Your tooth being treated must be a back molar tooth (large tooth in the back of your mouth)
  • Your tooth must have an infection inside (symptomatic irreversible pulpitis—meaning it's causing you pain and can't heal on its own)
  • You must be able to rate your pain level on a simple 0–10 scale during the study
  • You cannot have taken pain medication (like ibuprofen or acetaminophen) within 12 hours before your root canal
  • The tooth being treated cannot have been treated for this problem before
  • Your tooth cannot have an abscess (pocket of infection with pus) or visible swelling around it
