Who can take part
- You are having a primary (first-time) total knee replacement surgery
- You are 50 years of age or older
- You can give informed consent to participate in the study
- You have not had previous knee replacement surgery on the same knee
- You do not have a history of blood clots in deep leg veins within the past 6 months
- You are not currently taking immunosuppressive medications (drugs that weaken your immune system)
