This study tests whether adding surgery to remove the breast tumor and radiation therapy to destroy remaining cancer spots improves outcomes for people diagnosed with HER2-positive breast cancer that has already spread to a few other parts of the body. You'll receive standard chemotherapy and HER2-targeted drugs first, then be assigned to receive either additional surgery and radiation or to continue with standard care.

Who can take part

  • HER2-positive breast cancer that spread at diagnosis (stage IV) with 1–5 cancer spots in distant locations
  • No prior history of breast cancer before this diagnosis
  • At least 18 years old and able to tolerate standard cancer treatment
  • Either treatment-naïve or have completed 1–3 cycles of standard HER2-targeted therapy without disease progression
  • Able to receive surgery to the breast and radiation to all cancer spots, per your doctor's judgment
  • If brain metastases present: 5 or fewer lesions, each smaller than 2 cm, and no previous whole-brain radiation
