Who can take part

  • You are scheduled for cardiac (heart) surgery requiring general anesthesia and a breathing tube
  • You have significant heart disease or other serious health conditions (ASA status III or IV)
  • You are not allergic to dexmedetomidine or lignocaine (local anesthetic medicines)
  • You are not currently taking beta-blockers or calcium channel blockers, or willing to temporarily adjust these medications
  • You do not have a history of difficult intubation or airway problems
  • You are not pregnant or breastfeeding
