Who can take part
- You have major depressive disorder (clinical depression) as your primary diagnosis
- Your current depressive episode has lasted between 6 weeks and 18 months
- You do not have psychotic features (such as hallucinations or delusions) or catatonic features (extreme lack of movement or response)
- You have not failed 2 or more adequate trials of different antidepressant medications in the past
- You have not used alcohol or other substances as a primary problem in the past 12 months
- You are willing to stop most antidepressants for 4–6 weeks before starting the study
