Who can take part

  • You are 18–70 years old
  • You have esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (confirmed by biopsy) that is stage II–IIIB, with no spread to distant organs
  • You have never received chemotherapy or radiation for esophageal cancer
  • Your overall health is good enough to tolerate treatment (ECOG score 0–1, meaning you can do most daily activities)
  • Your heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, and thyroid function are basically normal
  • You are willing to use birth control during and for 8 weeks after the trial, and to return for regular check-ups and blood tests
