Heat therapy for leg pain from blocked arteries
Part of Heart & circulation clinical trials.
This trial tests if at-home heat therapy can improve walking ability in people with peripheral artery disease (PAD). PAD causes leg pain due to narrowed leg arteries.
Summary written for real people, not researchers, by Clin2.
Who can take part
- You are over 50 years old.
- You have PAD with an ankle-brachial index (ABI) between 0.4 and 0.9, meaning moderate blockage.
- You are not on active cancer treatment.
- You do not have severe kidney disease (eGFR below 30).
- Your BMI is under 35 (not class 2 or 3 obesity).
- You can wear water-circulating pants at home.

This trial studies whether applying heat to your legs can improve symptoms and function in people with peripheral artery disease (reduced blood flow to the legs). You may be tested with a simple blood-flow check and an MRI scan, depending on eligibility.
This study tests if a treatment called shortwave diathermy (a type of gentle heat therapy) can improve leg symptoms for people with PAD and nerve damage. It is only for patients at the Indianapolis VA.
This trial tests if regular heat therapy (like sauna or hot water) can improve walking and blood flow in people with peripheral artery disease (PAD) and leg pain when walking.
This trial tests if a supervised exercise program can improve walking ability in people with leg pain caused by blocked arteries (claudication). You may qualify if you have calf pain after walking short distances that goes away with rest.
This trial tests a new kind of exercise that is meant to be non-ischemic (not reduce blood flow) and pain-free, to see if it helps people with peripheral artery disease (PAD) who get leg pain when walking. You may be eligible if you have PAD confirmed by specific treadmill and blood-pressure measurements and meet the exercise and health safety requirements.
This trial tests a supervised exercise program for people with leg pain when walking caused by narrowed leg arteries. The goal is to see if exercise can improve walking ability and quality of life.
