Who can take part

  • You have been diagnosed with stable peripheral arterial disease (PAD, a condition that reduces blood flow to your legs).
  • You have pain or tightness in your leg muscles when walking (called claudication) that goes away with rest.
  • You have a specific test result (ankle-brachial index between 0.41 and 0.90) that shows moderate blockage in your leg arteries.
  • You have not had a procedure or surgery on your leg arteries (like angioplasty, stenting, or bypass) or taken part in a supervised exercise program for PAD.
  • You are not taking certain medicines for leg pain (cilostazol or pentoxifylline) and have not taken them in the last 3 months.
  • You can walk on a treadmill at a slow speed (about 2 mph) and your leg pain is not caused by other health problems like heart disease, lung disease, or arthritis.
