Who can take part

  • You are 18 or older and scheduled for heart surgery that uses a heart-lung machine, like bypass or valve surgery.
  • Your surgical risk is moderate to high (for example, a score of 3% or more on the EuroSCORE).
  • You are willing to receive blood products and can be assigned to different transfusion levels.
  • You are not someone who refuses blood (like a Jehovah's Witness), do not have severe anemia (hemoglobin less than 8), and are not on dialysis.
  • You are not pregnant or breastfeeding, and you are not in another trial that affects how blood transfusions are used.
