Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older.
  • You are on a breathing machine (ventilator) in a mode called 'Pressure Support Ventilation'.
  • Your doctor has noted a risk of air trapping in your lungs or trouble getting off the ventilator.
  • You already have a small pressure-measuring balloon in your esophagus (food pipe).
  • You are not pregnant, not breastfeeding, and do not have a serious esophageal problem.
