Who can take part
- You are at least 18 years old and have been on a breathing machine for 24 hours or more.
- Your medical team says you are ready to try breathing on your own (called a spontaneous breathing trial).
- You can trigger your own breaths on the ventilator with only a little help.
- Your oxygen levels are fairly good and you do not need very strong blood pressure support.
- You do not have severe or very severe COPD (a serious lung disease) or a major nerve/muscle disease that affects breathing.
