Diaphragm ultrasound to help predict breathing tube removal success

This study uses an ultrasound measure of how your diaphragm (the muscle that helps you breathe) moves in coordination as a way to predict whether you can successfully come off the breathing machine. If you are ready to try breathing on your own with a support mode, the test may help doctors know when you are truly ready to be free of the ventilator.

Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older
  • You have been on a breathing machine (ventilator) for at least 24 hours
  • Your doctor believes you are ready to try breathing on your own with a gentle support mode
  • Your blood pressure is stable or only needs a little medication
  • Your oxygen needs are low enough to attempt a breathing test
  • You do not have a known paralyzed diaphragm, recent chest surgery, or other condition that would make the ultrasound difficult
