Exercise prehabilitation for congenital heart surgery

This study tests whether a supervised exercise program before heart surgery can help adults with congenital heart disease recover better. You would join an exercise class 2–3 times a week for several weeks leading up to your operation.

Who can take part

  • You are an adult (18 or older) with a heart problem you were born with (congenital heart disease).
  • You are having heart surgery that involves opening your chest (through the breastbone or side).
  • Your surgery is scheduled at least 9 weeks from now, so you have time for the exercise program.
  • You are not pregnant, and you are not less than 6 months after giving birth.
  • Your resting oxygen levels are 94% or higher.
  • You do not have certain serious conditions, like severe lung or heart problems, that could make exercise unsafe.
