High-flow oxygen during breathing-machine weaning
Part of Lungs & breathing clinical trials.
This study tests whether using warm, moist oxygen through a special mask (high-flow oxygen) makes it easier for people to breathe while they are being weaned off a breathing machine in the ICU.
Summary written for real people, not researchers, by Clin2.
Who can take part
- You must be an adult (18 or older) on a breathing machine for more than 2 days.
- You should be at higher risk for failing the breathing test (over 65, or have chronic lung or heart disease).
- Your doctors must say you’re ready to try breathing without the machine (stable oxygen levels, calm, and stable heart rate).
- You need an arterial line (a small tube in your wrist or groin) to take blood samples.
- You cannot have any nerve, muscle, or brain condition that affects breathing, or be pregnant, in jail, or in another study.

This study tests two different types of breathing exercises to help people who are on a breathing machine get off it faster. The goal is to see which method works best and is safest.
This trial tests two different ways of adjusting a ventilator to help patients get off the breathing machine. It aims to find which method works better for people in the ICU who are ready to start the weaning process.
This study tests a special breathing therapy for intensive care patients who are having trouble coming off the ventilator. If you have weak muscles or a weak cough, the therapy aims to strengthen your breathing so you can recover faster.
This study looks at people on a breathing machine for more than 48 hours who are starting a “spontaneous breathing trial,” a test used to see if they can breathe on their own. It focuses on those at higher risk of “weaning-induced pulmonary edema,” meaning fluid can collect in the lungs during the weaning process.
This trial is testing a way to safely reduce high-flow oxygen therapy for patients in the ICU who have low oxygen levels. It might help find the right time to stop this treatment.
This study tests a special oxygen delivery method through a tracheostomy to help people safely come off a breathing machine. It may be an option if you have a tracheostomy and are ready to wean from the ventilator after more than 48 hours.
