  • You are 18 years or older
  • You are in an ICU with a tracheostomy placed during this hospital stay
  • You have been on a breathing machine for 60 days or less
  • You have successfully breathed on your own for at least 1 hour (a spontaneous breathing trial)
  • Your medical team is not planning comfort-care-only treatment
  • You and your doctor both agree to join the study
