Who can take part
- You must be 18 years or older.
- You are scheduled for elective (planned) or urgent (not emergency) surgery.
- Your doctor expects at least a 1 in 10 chance that you will need a red blood cell transfusion during or after surgery.
- Your hemoglobin (iron-carrying protein in blood) must be low before surgery (below 130) or drop below 100 during surgery.
- You cannot have active heavy bleeding as the reason for surgery, a recent heart attack, heart/lung/liver transplant surgery, severe brain injury, sickle cell disease, or be pregnant.
