- You are 50 years old or older.
- You are having surgery on your arm or hand under general anesthesia.
- You are in good enough health for surgery (classified as ASA I-III).
- You do not have severe memory or thinking problems that would prevent you from reporting pain or moving your arm.
- You do not have nerve damage in the arm being operated on.
- If you are in the nerve block group, you must not have any condition that makes a nerve block unsafe.
