Who can take part

  • You are scheduled for coronary artery bypass surgery (a type of open-heart surgery).
  • You are an adult (18 years or older).
  • You are not having emergency heart surgery.
  • You have not had previous open-heart surgery through the breastbone.
  • You have no known allergies to numbing medicines, no bleeding problems, and no active infection.
  • You do not have severe heart rhythm problems or weak heart pumping (ejection fraction less than 40%).
  • You are not already taking strong pain medicines (opioids) long-term, and you have no significant psychiatric conditions.
