Who can take part

  • You are 18 years or older.
  • You are scheduled for a planned (non-emergency) open chest surgery.
  • Your overall health is classified as ASA I to III (a standard rating used by doctors).
  • You are not pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You do not have any condition that prevents the placement of an epidural or nerve block, like an infection at the site, severe spinal issues, or allergies to the medications used for the block.
  • You are not using strong opioid painkillers on a daily basis for more than 3 months.
  • Your body mass index (BMI) is not higher than 35.
  • You do not have severe liver or kidney disease.
  • You are able to understand and report your pain level.
  • You agree to receive the nerve block.
