Who can take part
- You are 18 years old or older.
- Your BMI is 35 or higher.
- You are scheduled for laparoscopic surgery expected to last more than 2 hours.
- You have not had lung surgery before.
- You have not been on a breathing machine (ventilator) for more than 30 minutes in the last month.
- You have not taken chemotherapy or radiation within the last 2 months.
- You are not having brain or heart surgery.
- You do not need one-lung ventilation during surgery.
- You will not be positioned face-down or on your side during surgery.
- You are not participating in another research study.
- You are not pregnant.
- You do not have unstable blood pressure or shock.
- You do not have severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
- You do not have severe heart disease.
- You do not have acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).
- You do not have severe pulmonary hypertension.
- You do not have a brain injury, brain tumor, or nerve/muscle disease.
- You do not have esophageal disease or anatomy that would prevent placement of a stomach tube.
