Understanding persistent facial pain through brain scans

Persistent Idiopathic Facial Pain (PIFP)

This study uses brain imaging to better understand persistent pain in the face (orofacial pain) that has no clear cause. Participation involves MRI scans and may include electrode stimulation. The goal is to learn more about this condition to improve future treatments.

Who can take part

  • You are a healthy volunteer (no chronic pain or headaches) and can consent to the study, or you have been diagnosed with persistent facial pain (PIFP) according to specific diagnostic criteria.
  • You can undergo an MRI scan (no metal implants, pacemakers, etc.).
  • You do not have claustrophobia or anxiety disorders.
  • You have no other pain conditions, headaches, or regular medications (occasional pain relievers are allowed for PIFP patients, but not within 24 hours of the study).
  • Your skin at the stimulation sites is clear of lesions, infections, or scarring.
  • Not pregnant or breastfeeding.
