This study looks at “biomarkers” (measurable signals in samples) taken during bronchoscopy or related procedures in people with severe airway pre-cancer or certain lung/throat cancers, and in healthy volunteers. The goal is to better understand what these biomarkers mean and how they might help with diagnosis, staging, or monitoring.

Who can take part

  • You have severe or extensive airway lining dysplasia, or you don’t have dysplasia (a comparison group).
  • You must be getting a bronchoscopy/panendoscopy or a related procedure for clinical reasons (not just for the study).
  • If you have had cancer before: you’ve had at least 1 year since an aerodigestive cancer, and for non-small cell lung cancer it must be fully removed (stage I).
  • You should not have major bleeding problems (no bleeding disorder and no unusual bleeding tendency).
  • Your heart and lung health must be stable enough for bronchoscopy (for example, no recent heart attack and no serious uncontrolled heart rhythm problems).
  • You should not have a recent serious lung infection (no acute bronchitis or pneumonia in the past 8 weeks, unless the doctor believes it’s from cancer) and oxygen levels should not be low before the procedure.
