First test of an implant device to prevent sleep apnea pauses

Who can take part

  • Be between 21 and 70 years old
  • Have moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea (about 15–50 breathing pauses per hour)
  • Have tried CPAP but couldn’t tolerate it (using it less than 2 hours per night for at least 5 nights/week)
  • Be able to sign consent and understand the study plan and risks
  • Have apnea caused by blockage at the base of the tongue—not a different type like central apnea
  • Be able to have an implanted device placed and have no metal or other reasons MRI/surgery would be risky
