Who can take part
- You have progressive ataxia (worsening trouble with balance and coordination).
- Your ataxia started after age 40.
- No close family members (parents/siblings/grandparents, etc.) have a similar disorder, and your parents were typically diagnosed or died after age 50.
- Your ataxia is not from a known acquired cause such as stroke, brain infection, severe blood infection (sepsis), very high body temperature/heat stroke, long-term toxin exposure, or alcohol misuse.
- Your symptoms did not start very fast (severe ataxia developing in under 12 weeks), and you do not have insulin-dependent diabetes.
- Imaging and lab tests do not suggest other specific causes (like multiple sclerosis or a tumor) and basic blood/immune/nerve-related tests are negative/normal as required. (Some genetic tests may be needed depending on MRI findings and your symptoms.)
