MRI brain and thinking tests in urea cycle disorders

Urea Cycle Disorders

This study uses MRI scans and memory/thinking tests to understand brain effects of urea cycle disorders, like ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency (OTCD) and argininosuccinate (ASSD/ASLD). It may help researchers understand how brain function changes during and between metabolic crises.

Who can take part

  • You must have the right diagnosis: OTCD, or ASSD/ASLD, or be a matched healthy control
  • You must be able to have an MRI without sedation (no “sleep medicine”)
  • You must be within the required age range for your group (OTCD up to age 50; crisis group up to age 30; ASSD/ASLD up to age 30)
  • You must have no MRI safety issues like metal implants or braces that can’t go in the scanner
  • You (or your guardian) must be able to follow consent/assent rules and understand the study
