Radiation after mastectomy for certain node-negative breast cancers

Who can take part

  • You have breast cancer that is stage pT1 or pT2 and has no spread to lymph nodes (N0) and no distant spread (M0)
  • Your mastectomy was done first on one side, and the surgeon removed the tumor with clear margins (at least 1 mm away from invasive cancer or DCIS)
  • You had axillary (underarm) node checking such as node clearance, sampling, or a sentinel node biopsy
  • Your biggest tumor size is greater than 2 cm, OR you have a multifocal tumor where the overall measured size is greater than 2 cm
  • You have at least one higher-risk feature (for T2: one risk; for T1: any listed risk such as high grade, lymph vessel invasion, ER/PR negative, HER2 positive, or age under 35)
