Who can take part
- Be between 18 and 70 years old
- Be scheduled for abdominal surgery (including liver transplant or other abdominal operations)
- For people in the control group: have elective abdominal surgery such as gallbladder removal or certain bowel procedures
- Avoid heavy alcohol use (over 20 g/day for women or 30 g/day for men)
- Do not have specific medical problems that can cause low nutrition (for example uncontrolled diabetes or thyroid disease, kidney trouble, vitamin B12/folate deficiency, active IV drug use, prior bowel or gastric bypass surgery)
- Not be pregnant; and avoid supplements/medicines that change fat or protein levels (for example creatine or steroid medicines)
