Who can take part

  • You have sickle cell anemia (Hgb SS or S/B thalassemia).
  • Your baseline hemoglobin level is above 60% (as measured in clinic labs).
  • You are likely high-risk due to things like stroke/TIA or abnormal brain blood-flow test, frequent acute chest syndrome, severe pain crises, recurrent priapism, or joint bone damage (osteonecrosis).
  • Your age is 1 to 30 years.
  • You must have a related donor who is “half-matched” for key tissue types (HLA-A, B, C, DRB1), and no fully matched sibling or fully matched (10/10) unrelated donor is available.
  • You must not have an uncontrolled infection, active cancer (except non-melanoma skin cancer), be pregnant, or have had a prior transplant.
