- You have rectal adenocarcinoma (a specific type of rectal cancer found on biopsy).
- Your tumor is located within 12 cm of the anus (as measured by your doctor).
- Your cancer stage fits roughly stage II–III, specifically T3–T4 and/or N0–N1–2 (your staging report should match this range).
- You have not had any chemotherapy, radiation, or immunotherapy before starting the planned “neoadjuvant” (pre-surgery) treatment.
- You can understand and sign the informed consent form.
- Your bowel is not blocked and there is no risk of a blockage, and there is no bowel perforation.
- You have not had any other cancer diagnosed in the last 5 years.
