Test of physiotherapy versus surgery for exercise leg muscle pressure

Compartment Syndrome Nontraumatic Lower Leg

This trial compares a physiotherapy program to a surgical procedure (fasciotomy) for chronic “compartment” pressure in the lower leg triggered by exercise. If you have symptoms that reliably come on with walking/running and improve with rest, the study may offer a structured way to find the best treatment for you.

Who can take part

  • You are between 18 and 50 years old
  • Your leg symptoms have been going on for more than 3 months
  • You have similar exercise-related pain in both legs (crampy/tight/burning/pressure in the front of the lower leg starting after about 10 minutes)
  • Rest helps: most of your pain improves within 30 minutes of stopping exercise
  • You have not had previous lower-leg fasciotomy surgery
  • Your overall health is not too limited (ASA score is 2 or lower)
