This study tests whether removing certain inflammation signals (cytokines) can help people with severe heart infection (infective endocarditis) who are having heart surgery soon. It may help reduce harmful inflammation around the time of surgery, but it also has several medication and health-condition requirements.

Who can take part

  • You are at least 18 years old.
  • Your medical team has diagnosed infective endocarditis using the study’s criteria and you are scheduled for routine heart surgery for it.
  • You’ve been on antibiotic treatment for 14 days or less before surgery.
  • You can sign the study consent form (or have consent given appropriately).
  • You have not taken certain immune-targeting medicines in the last 6 months (such as biologic immune therapies or drugs like rituximab).
  • You are not on long-term high-dose steroids (prednisone more than 30 mg per day) started before the infection.
  • You are not on ECMO or other heart support machines before surgery.
  • Your expected survival is not very short (life expectancy is not under 14 days).
