Who can take part

  • Your child must be 10 years old or younger.
  • Your child must weigh at least 5 kg (about 11 pounds).
  • Your child is scheduled for open-heart surgery that will use a heart-lung machine for at least 2 hours.
  • The parent or legal guardian must agree to the study and sign a consent form.
  • Your child must not have a known allergy to heparin, which is a blood thinner used during surgery.
  • Your child must not have a platelet count below 20 (measure of a type of blood cell) before surgery.
