Who can take part

  • You are a healthy adult and not pregnant (and you won’t become pregnant during the study)
  • Your hemoglobin (a blood oxygen-carrying protein) is above 12 g/dl
  • You do not have blood disorders that affect oxygen delivery (like sickle cell or inherited bleeding/clotting problems)
  • Your blood pressure and heart rate are within study limits (with only limited exceptions)
  • You are not taking blood thinners (like warfarin, heparin, clopidogrel, enoxaparin, dalteparin) and avoid certain other heart/lung/nerve medicines
  • You can safely do the study without breathing-mask problems for about 2–3 hours
