Who can take part

  • You are scheduled for elective non-cardiac surgery that is expected to require more than 8 units of blood (about 1600 mL)
  • You are between 18 and 75 years old
  • Your hemoglobin level is above 120 g/L (if you are a man) or above 110 g/L (if you are a woman) before surgery
  • You do not refuse blood transfusions
  • You do not have serious heart, lung, brain, kidney, or blood disorders
