Who can take part
- You are 65 or older and have a fracture in the lower part of the thigh bone near the knee
- Your fracture happened recently (within 2 weeks of injury) and is the type that could be treated either way in the study
- Before the injury, you could walk on your own or with a walking aid
- You are not severely frail (your frailty score is about 3 to 6) and you can follow study materials in English, French, or Spanish
- You can give informed consent in writing (or your substitute decision-maker can)
- The fracture is not an open fracture, not related to major infection, and not part of more widespread severe injuries
