This study looks at stool samples to see whether gut bacteria or other microbes help explain why some rectal cancers respond less well to treatment given before surgery. If you have mid or lower rectal cancer and are planning pre-surgery treatment, your information and stool sample may help researchers improve how treatment is chosen.

Who can take part

  • You have confirmed cancer of the lower or middle rectum (adenocarcinoma) and it is stage II or III.
  • You are planning “neoadjuvant” treatment first (radiation with chemo and/or chemotherapy).
  • You must be able to give informed consent and be 18 or older.
  • You cannot take antibiotics during the month before your stool sample.
  • You must not have a permanent or temporary stoma (ostomy), and you should not have had pelvic radiation in the past year.
  • You should not be pregnant or breastfeeding; and you must use reliable birth control during treatment and for at least 8 weeks after the last course of radiochemotherapy.
