Who can take part
- Be 18 years or older and able to understand and sign consent
- Be scheduled for total mesorectal excision (TME) surgery for rectal cancer, agreed by a specialist team
- Your tumor must be 12 cm or less from the anus (the anal opening)
- You must be medically able to have pelvic radiotherapy if needed (no major radiotherapy contraindications)
- You must be able and willing to follow study visits and instructions, and allow your doctor(s) to be told you joined
- If you are female: you cannot be pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning pregnancy during the study
