- You are 18 years or older.
- You have been diagnosed with rectal cancer and are scheduled for surgery to remove the rectum.
- Your surgeon plans to reconnect the remaining intestine to the anus (sphincter-saving surgery), possibly with a temporary colostomy bag.
- You are not having a surgery where the surgeon stitches the colon and anus together by hand.
- You are not having a surgery that removes the anus and creates a permanent colostomy (abdominoperineal resection)
- You do not have or have never had another invasive cancer in the pelvic area (like bladder, prostate, or uterine cancer).
