Study to understand eye disease risk in premature babies

Retinopathy of Prematurity

This study looks at newborn eye exams and genetic information to better understand why some premature infants develop a serious vision problem called ROP. You may be invited because your baby needs routine eye screening or is being moved for specialized eye care.

Who can take part

  • Your baby must be in the hospital at a participating neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
  • Your baby needs an ROP eye screening exam based on standard national guidelines, or you’re being transferred for specialized eye care.
  • Your baby must not have a structural eye problem (an unusual eye shape or structure).
  • Your baby must be considered stable enough for an eye exam by the NICU doctor (neonatologist).
  • The study team will do genetic and clinical information review as part of the research plan.
