3D printed tools to help anesthesia for children with cleft face

This study uses computer planning and 3D printed models to help the anesthesia team manage breathing and airway safety during a child’s cleft-related surgery. It may improve planning and safety by matching the anesthesia plan to your child’s anatomy.

Who can take part

  • Your child has a cleft lip with gum (“alveolus”) or a cleft lip plus palate, or an isolated cleft palate
  • For cleft lip/alveolus: the first repair happened when your baby was 0–3 months old
  • For total cleft (lip + gum + palate) or isolated cleft palate: the first repair happened between 6–18 months old
  • The cleft type is not an excluded “atypical” cleft, and it’s not submucous cleft palate
  • Your child is not on a breathing machine before surgery, and their airway is not already secured before the procedure
  • An approved guardian consent form for the study has been obtained
