This study looks at why some people develop liver inflammation after checkpoint inhibitor cancer treatment, called checkpoint inhibitor–induced liver injury (ChILI). It compares people with ChILI to similar cancer patients who are starting the same type of immunotherapy, to better understand and track these liver injury events.

Who can take part
- You can give consent in writing, or (if you have ChILI-related encephalopathy) a legal helper/consultee can consent for you
- You either have confirmed ChILI after checkpoint inhibitor treatment or you are a cancer patient who is about to start checkpoint inhibitors
- If you are in the ChILI group, your blood tests at the start of the study must show specific liver enzyme or bilirubin level elevations
- Before joining, the study team must not find another known reason for your liver injury after additional medical workup
- You cannot be taking chemotherapy at the same time as checkpoint inhibitors during the study period
- The study team must not think there is a clear alternative explanation for your acute illness
