Who can take part
- You’re older than 18 years
- You have cirrhosis plus high blood pressure
- A recent scope found medium to large esophageal varices
- You have NOT had any variceal bleeding before, and you haven’t had prior prevention treatment for varices
- You are NOT currently taking medicines that change portal pressure, like beta blockers or nitrates
- You can’t have certain major exclusions like carvedilol allergy, pregnancy, severe heart/lung disease, severe diabetes or kidney problems
