This pilot study tests a fetal procedure (placing a tiny balloon in the fetus’s airway) to improve lung growth in pregnancies affected by severe left congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). You may be eligible if your baby’s condition is isolated to the left side and the testing shows very high lung underdevelopment, and if you can meet study and payment requirements.

Who can take part

  • You must be pregnant, age 18 or older, with a single (one) baby
  • Your baby must have isolated left CDH (not right-sided or both sides), with the liver up
  • Genetic testing must not show a harmful chromosome condition (normal karyotype confirmed by lab testing)
  • Your pregnancy must be enrolled before 29 weeks 6 days, and the balloon procedure must happen between 27 weeks and 29 weeks 6 days
  • Ultrasound must show severe lung underdevelopment (LHR O/E under 25%) at the time of surgery
  • You must meet the study’s psychosocial support requirements and be able to get insurance approval or self-pay (or try Medicaid)

Fetoscopic surgery for severe diaphragmatic hernia

This trial tests if a special surgery (FETO) done while the baby is still in the womb can improve survival for babies with a severe form of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). The surgery places a small balloon in the baby's windpipe to help the lungs grow. We are looking for pregnant women whose baby has a left-sided CDH with a lung-to-head ratio (LHR) less than 30%, or a right-sided CDH with LHR less than 45%, and whose liver is herniated into the chest.
