- You have long-term (chronic) liver disease caused by hepatitis that has led to cirrhosis
- You can provide informed consent (or your legal representative can)
- Your liver disease is not in the most severe stage (Child-Pugh class C)
- Your blood clotting and infection risk tests should be acceptable (platelets not too low and INR not too high)
- You have not had certain prior shunt procedures, and your portal vein area is reachable during the procedure
