Brain scan to compare Parkinson chemical signals in early patients

This study uses a special 7‑Tesla MRI brain scan to measure tiny chemical (metabolite) differences in specific deep brain areas. It compares newly diagnosed, early-stage Parkinson’s patients who are not on Parkinson medication with healthy volunteers.

Who can take part

  • If you have Parkinson’s: diagnosis of “idiopathic” Parkinson’s and early stage (Hoehn and Yahr 1–2)
  • You have not started dopaminergic Parkinson’s treatment and have had symptoms for about 5 years
  • No major memory/cognition problems (MoCA score above 24)
  • You can safely have an MRI (no metal implants/electronic devices; claustrophobia must be manageable)
  • You are not pregnant, and you are not receiving deep brain stimulation
  • You are not taking certain brain-affecting medicines (psych drugs such as antidepressants, antipsychotics, benzodiazepines, or anti-seizure meds)
