It aims to start the right antibiotics quickly, before MRSA status is fully confirmed, using early testing and a treatment plan guided by infectious-disease specialists.

Who can take part

  • You must be 18 years or older
  • You have a confirmed or suspected S. aureus bloodstream infection within the last 48 hours
  • Your MRSA risk is low (recent negative MRSA swab within 90 days) or your MRSA status is unknown
  • Your care team is currently using cefazolin or can switch you to cefazolin as the main antibiotic
  • You must be able to consent (or have a healthcare proxy if you cannot)
  • You cannot have certain allergies (severe allergy to beta-lactam antibiotics, and any allergy to ertapenem), among other safety reasons
