Who can take part
- You’re an adult (18 years or older).
- Your bloodstream infection started recently, and blood cultures show E. coli or Klebsiella (in one or more blood culture bottles).
- The germ is not susceptible to common 3rd-generation cephalosporin antibiotics (like ceftriaxone or ceftazidime) but is susceptible to both study antibiotics (piperacillin-tazobactam and meropenem).
- The first positive blood culture was taken within the last 72 hours (not later).
- This infection is not a mixed infection with multiple different germ species in the same episode.
- You’re not in severe shock at enrollment, and you don’t have certain specific infections (heart valve infection, bone infection that isn’t removed, or brain/spinal cord infection).
