Planning treatment using radiation plus radioactive iodine for thyroid cancer

Recurrent Thyroid Cancer

This Phase 1 study tests how doctors plan a combination of two radiation approaches—external beam radiation and radioactive iodine—for thyroid cancer that is not fully responding to standard treatment. It may help people who still have iodine-avid tumor spots, but whose iodine uptake looks too low to work well with radioactive iodine alone.

Who can take part

  • You have papillary or follicular thyroid cancer (differentiated thyroid cancer) proven by a pathology report
  • Your cancer can’t be fully removed with surgery, or it has spread to places where surgery can’t remove it completely
  • Your scans show leftover tumor that “takes up” radioactive iodine, but the uptake is lower than expected, so iodine alone is unlikely to work
  • You must be 18 to 85 years old, and you should have enough kidney, blood, and bone-marrow function for study treatment planning
  • You are not pregnant or breastfeeding, and you must be willing to use effective birth control if needed
  • You must not have certain medical situations that make radioactive iodine or external beam radiation unsafe
