Who can take part
- Be at least 70 years old and able to understand/consent
- Plan to have elective aortic valve replacement (AVR) or coronary bypass (CABG)
- On the first day after surgery (POD 1), not need strong “heart support” medicines (inotropes) and not be on a breathing machine (ventilation)
- On POD 1, doctors expect you to be able to leave the intensive care unit and go to a regular hospital ward
- Have moderate iron-related anemia after surgery (hemoglobin 85–110 g/L plus low iron stores, such as low ferritin or low iron saturation)
