This study collects skin samples from people with and without type 2 diabetes, especially around foot skin problems, to learn how skin “micro-germs” differ. The goal is to better understand what’s going on in diabetic skin lesions and possibly guide future care.

Who can take part
- You’re age 18 or older, and you (or a family member) agree to join
- You can provide a cotton swab skin sample from the skin/feet area
- If you have type 2 diabetes, you’re having surgery for a foot problem like diabetic foot infection/osteomyelitis or injuries needing debridement or amputation below the knee
- If you do not have type 2 diabetes, you’re having similar foot surgery for other causes (not diabetes)
- You do not have other skin diseases that would interfere with the sample, and you can follow sample-cleaning rules (no medical soap use and no foot cosmetics)
- You have no severe liver or kidney disease, immune system disease, HIV, cancer, and you have not used immune-suppressing medicines in the past 4 weeks
